Skookum dolls were first created by Mary McAboy in 1913. Their popularity led McAboy to partner with H.H. Tammen Co. in 1920, where she oversaw the Skookum assembly division until her retirement in 1952. These dolls were commonly sold as souvenirs for travelers, and were crafted to represent Native American individuals and families. Each doll was carefully made in a variety of sizes and styles, depicting various tribes and traditional attire in a stylized manner. This particular Skookum Woman with Child showcases a woman wrapped in a blanket, carrying a child on her back.
