Kachina Doll by Ron Honyouti
Ron Honyouti has been an accomplished carver for over 50 years, earning countless prestigious awards throughout his career. Some of his most beloved pieces are the Longhair and Crow Mother figures. Hailing from a family of skilled artisans, he is a renowned and award-winning member of the carving community.
The process of crafting Kachina dolls has transformed from the traditional, block-like figures to intricately detailed, all-wood representations with lifelike features and movements. Initially used as a teaching tool for Hopi children to learn about their culture and upcoming ceremonies, Kachina dolls have evolved to include bases for support and depictions of the Kachina in dynamic actions like dancing or hunting. These dolls are traditionally carved from the root of the Cottonwood tree.
