Rio Grande Pueblo Buffalo Dancer By Lui Escoto/Metal Wired Kachina
Lui Escoto, a self-taught sculptor, utilizes galvanized steel wire and aluminum mesh, and occasionally steel copper, to meticulously craft lifelike sculptures depicting Native American individuals in various poses and circumstances. With a career spanning back to 1972, Escoto operates from his residence in Tucson."I am the opposite of the traditional sculptor," Said Escoto. "They take something and take away from it, I start with nothing and add to it."
The creation of Escoto's sculptures is a meticulous and time-consuming process. Smaller pieces can take anywhere from 30 to 100 hours to construct, while larger ones can require upwards of 200 hours of work.
