Pima Geometric Interlocked Basket
Description:
This geometric interlocked basket is a prime example of renowned Pima designs, crafted from willow using intricate weaving techniques.
During the 1930's Great Depression, Pima willow basketry saw a decline in production while coarse twined burden baskets remained in use. This was due to multiple factors, including a decrease in tourism to the Southwest and the introduction of cheap, mass-produced pots and pans during the Industrial Revolution. As a result, the labor-intensive art of basket weaving, perfected over thousands of years, lost its cultural significance and many weavers had to find new lines of work. Despite this loss, the incredible imagination and creativity of these weavers can still be seen in their remarkable baskets, serving as a testimony to their legacy.
